My mom

Saturday, May 9th, 2015

This blog post goes out to all of the single mom’s out there–especially mine.

Last month I was driving somewhere in my car and I started to write this blog post in my head. My mom popped into my mind and since I’m an awful child who never does anything for Mother’s Day I started thinking that I was going to write an amazing blog post for my mom. The post I wrote in my head while driving was amazing. I admit I was crying by the end of it, and I was so excited because I had a whole month to craft my blog, scan old photos and just create something that really would show my mom just how amazing I think she is.

And well last Monday I still thought I had a whole 6 days to get the post together, and now it is just 2.5 hours until Mother’s Day, and I am just hoping I can say a few words, other than sorry mom.

My mom is super smart. I remember as a kid being really proud to watch her play trivial pursuit at family gatherings, or to listen to her debate friends and family about politics. Later in life I learned to use her smarts to my advantage as an editor on all of my papers. She just couldn’t help herself. Actually I wish I wasn’t as good as tricking her into cleaning up all of my papers, because maybe the blog writing would come easier to me.

Writing is what my mom has always done well. She was a reporter for most of my life, but she also dabbled in some romance writing, jingles, personal ads, and she even wrote a book about one of my teddy bears called, “Suitable, a bear for all ages”.

There are certain things and moments that stand out when I think of my mom.

There is the super smart thing that I already mentioned. And I want to mention a million other things, little stories that are the things that pop into my mind when I think of how hard it must have been for her to try to stay afloat financially, times when she pushed me and times when she surprised me.

But really–the best, best thing about my mom is that she has never once made me feel guilty for not doing anything special for Mother’s Day. I know that she will wake up tomorrow and even if I don’t post this post, she will still love me–and I’m pretty sure she won’t be disappointed.

She doesn’t sweat the small stuff. She doesn’t need a card to know I love her.

Thanks for that mom. I love you.

And, some photos of mom.

So this photo is of me and not my mom, but I am still amazed that she made me Halloween costumes. My mother was never known for any domestic arts, but somehow she can make Halloween costumes and knit socks while working more than full time. I think meals and laundry might have suffered a little, but still…IMG_4988

And, as I finish this poorly done blog post that never lived up to the one I had written in my mind I will climb into bed and continue reading the new novel my mom just finished. I am so proud of her.

flashback sessions| Syracuse, NY family photographer

Friday, March 27th, 2015

It is another gloomy day here in Syracuse–we have had a share recently. I have been trying to keep a positive attitude, but some days are harder than others. I wonder how many new houses were bought in Florida or North Carolina by Central New Yorker’s this winter. I would bet there will be quite a few houses for sale here this summer.

These photos were not taken this summer, but they are a few of my favorites from sessions this winter. As you can see some were taken before the snow started to fall.

The theater, the theater| Syracuse, NY photographer

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

I have photographed many adorable families this fall and winter(and will share them soon), but I have also gotten to branch out a bit and photograph a lot of local theater. It all started this winter when my daughter participated in the summer theater program put on by  Redhouse Arts Center of Tarzan. The kids got to work along side professional actors and they put on a stellar production.

I have always enjoyed the theater and I have been surrounded by it in many ways all of my life. My namesake and great grandmother, Genevieve Guiou served as the President of the Omaha Community Playhouse for a time in the 20’s. And my Grandmother, Echo Guiou Ellick acted in plays there as well and even wrote a few plays that got produced. My father is drama at all times, and now my youngest daughter has caught the bug. 😉 I don’t know why it took me so long to find out about all of the great local theater here in Syracuse.

Here are just a few of my favorite images from recent shows–all at the Redhouse Arts Center unless specified.

Cady & Mark are married!! | Syracuse, NY wedding photographer

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

I had been looking forward to this wedding ever since meeting Cady and Mark during our initial consultation and photographing their engagement session. They did not disappoint. Their wedding was so much fun to photograph-full of laughter and joy and a wonderful relaxed attitude despite some last minute setbacks with their ceremony location.

Admiring the dress and the rainy view.

an amazing birth | Syracuse, NY birth and newborn photographer

Sunday, August 10th, 2014

I have just sat and stared at my computer trying to put into words how incredible it is to be selected to photograph a birth and I keep coming up with a white screen. I guess that is why I am a photographer.

Fran was amazing during her daughter’s birth and labor lasted all day and night.

Family Session on the lake | Cazenovia, NY family photographer

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Remember the mini summer polar vortex that hit recently? It came on all of a sudden and changed the weather from tanktops and shorts to jeans and sweater weather. It was a lovely relief from the super hot humid weather, but it was a bit of a disappointment for the family I was photographing because they had hoped to do lots of photos in the water.

So, we settled for the beautiful yard to start the session.

There was an awesome tree swing and a new PUPPY!! This really is the perfect combination for family photos.

7

I do love photographing twins and especially getting a non-smile photo of them to compare to the smile photo.

Back to work| Syracuse, NY family photographer

Monday, June 30th, 2014

I hope you enjoyed all my New Zealand photos, and I still owe you an Australia blog, but for now I have been back at work and it is time to show some of it off.

I will start with a beautiful and fun family. I left the session wishing I too had 5 kids. Who knew?!

home water birth| Syracuse, NY family photographer

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

This family gave me such an amazing gift by hiring me to photograph their home water birth.

What an amazing thing to get to witness and photograph. It was one of those days where I didn’t question at all why I do what I do.

By the time I arrived Maria was already about 7 cm dilated.

Untitled-1

Untitled-2

Most of these photographs show Maria working through a contraction, but as soon as the contraction passed you could hardly tell she was in labor.

Untitled-3

She must have been very close to fully dilated when she went on this walk.

Untitled-4

Untitled6

Her husband was in charge of getting the pool to the right temperature. I wonder if Mackenzie-Childs ever thought their kettles would be used for this purpose.

Palma & Chris are married!!!| Syracuse, NY wedding photographer

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

I am finally getting around to sharing the amazing wedding of Palma and Chris. The wedding and reception took place at what must be my favorite location, Frog Pond Bed and Breakfast in Skaneateles. I think I would like to tell all my future couples to get married here.

Palma also had one of the most beautiful dresses I have photographed.
